Just a thought...

All of this technology is wonderful. It really makes it easier to bring the outside world into a classroom. It gives students the opportunity to see and "experience" things that 10 years ago, none of us would have believed.

My concern is that with all this online classes and teaching...where is the humanity??? My 3rd graders need to see me, to hug me, to know that I CARE! There is a large level of self confidence that needs to be in a child's soul to know that someone can care via the internet.

These days are filled with empty parents and role models...our children have become quite adept at texting their thoughts...but they can't write them, they can't speak them...

As an old lady, I don't want technology to take that away...

  1. I understand your concern. Many kids end up turning to the internet and social networking sites to feel connected with someone. The sad fact is that a lot of them are not smart about the things they say online or who they interact with. I agree with you. We need to show our students/kids that we care and give them that feeling of connecting with a live person. Even so, kids will still want to find a connection online as a way to fit in larger groups. Should we ignore this, or should we give guidance on using these sites?

  2. Although you may feel like you will lose your connection with kids because of all the online interaction, I think it will bring you closer together. You're speaking their language. You are helping them learn on their own terms. I feel so loved when my own Mom takes the time to say hello via texting because it's not her arena at all. It probably took her 15 minutes to send "Hello there!" and that makes it all the more important to me. I think the same applies to the kids. By interacting and showing them how to use the tools they've developed on their own, you are taking an interest in their life. They get it, I promise.
